Lotus LED Diya – Pack of 6

The easiest glow-up your urli will ever get

A traditional urli full of floating diyas is one of the most beautiful things about Diwali — and one of the most annoying to set up. Oil, wicks, matches, floating candles that tip over, and one flame that always drowns.

These lotus flowers take all of that away. Set them on water and they light up on their own. Lift them out and they switch off. That is the entire instruction manual.

You get six 10 cm lotus flowers — each one a single moulded bloom with an LED at its centre, sized to be seen from across a room rather than lost in a bowl.

How the water sensor works — drop, glow, done

Turn a diya over and you will see two small copper dots on the underside. Water conducts between them and completes the circuit, so the LED comes to life the instant the flower touches water — and goes dark the moment it is lifted out.

  1. Pour 2–3 cm of clean water into an urli, bowl, tray or watertight plate.
  2. Set the lotus flower on the surface. It floats, the copper dots sense the water, and it glows.
  3. When the evening is over, lift them out, tip out the water and let them dry. Stored dry, they are ready for next year.

No switch to find in the dark, no timer to set, and nothing left burning in a room you have walked away from.

Lotus on water — the symbol, and why it belongs in your urli

The lotus carries a specific meaning in Diwali decorating. It grows up through mud and still opens clean, so it is read as purity, grace and rising above difficulty. Lakshmi is traditionally shown seated on a fully opened lotus, which is why a floating lotus in a water-filled urli is such a common way to welcome prosperity into the home at Diwali.

Practically, that is why lotus-shaped floating lights look right in an urli in a way a plain round diya does not: the flower sits on the water like it belongs there, and the glow comes from the centre of the bloom.

Where to use your floating lotus diyas

Urli centre piece — Six lotuses is one urli’s worth. Float them in a wide metal or glass bowl with marigolds and rose petals. Go wide rather than deep: a shallow bowl keeps every flower in view instead of stacking them on top of each other.

Mandir and pooja thali — A warm, even glow on the altar through Lakshmi Puja, with no smoke and no oil to clean off your idols afterwards.

Rangoli border — Set a few along the edge of your rangoli on a watertight base. Being flameless, they can sit right beside petals and coloured powders.

Diwali dinner table — A glass bowl down the centre of the table, or one lotus at each place setting as a favour guests can take home.

Entrance and balcony — A shallow tray or trough by the door, or on a covered balcony beside your toran and string lights.

Weddings, sangeet and mehndi — Floating centrepieces that need no flame and no supervision. Order multiples: six covers one small table or one medium urli.

Pools, ponds and patios in summer — Because they are water activated, they double as floating pool and pond lights, in a bathtub or a big water bowl on the patio, and as centrepieces for bridal showers and garden parties.

Why flameless wins in a Canadian home

  • Safe near children, pets and drapes — no flame, no hot wax, no hot oil, and the flower itself stays cool.
  • Condo and apartment friendly — no smoke, no soot, and no open-flame rule broken.
  • Reusable — a floating candle burns once and it is gone. These come back out for Holi, Navratri, Karwa Chauth, pooja days and family celebrations.
  • No supplies to buy — no wicks, no oil, no matches.

Care and troubleshooting

  • Use clean water. Petals or powder resting on the copper dots can stop the sensor reading the water. Clear the dots before each use.
  • If a flower will not light: wipe the copper dots with a dry cloth, top up the water so both dots are submerged, and try again.
  • Do not push them under. They are designed to float with the dots in contact with the water — submerging them fully is not necessary and will not help.
  • Dry before storing. Shake off the water and leave them upside down on a cloth overnight. Storing them damp is the fastest way to shorten battery life and corrode the copper contacts.
  • Cold water is fine; freezing is not. Bring them inside well before the first hard frost, and do not leave them out in the rain.
